Parent & Family Member Information

Our New Student Orientation program is designed primarily for students, but parents and family members are welcome to attend. While participation is not required, we encourage students to consider bringing a trusted adult to share in the experience.

Below are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions:

Do I need to attend?
Attendance is optional. Many students choose to bring a parent or family member, while others attend on their own. Either option is perfectly fine.

Why should I attend?
Our program offers sessions specifically for parents and family members, providing helpful insights into campus resources, student support services, and the transition to college. You’ll also have opportunities to ask questions, connect with campus offices, and meet other families. We’ve found that family support plays an important role in a student’s success, and your presence can help ease the transition.

What if I cannot attend?
If you’re unable to attend, we encourage you to connect with your student afterward. Ask questions, review any materials they received, and remind them to regularly check their Pitt email for important updates and deadlines.

Is there a fee?
Yes. The fee is $75 per guest for the overnight (1½-day) program and $50 per guest for the single-day program. This cost includes meals and program materials.

Will I be with my student during the program?
Not always. Some sessions are designed specifically for students or for guests. Meals are also scheduled. However, there will be opportunities throughout the program to connect with your student.

Can I bring other family members or children?
You’re welcome to bring additional guests; however, please keep in mind that the program is designed for adults. Younger children may find it difficult to stay engaged throughout the day, so we encourage you to use your best judgment.

Is lodging provided?
Overnight accommodations are available for students only (for a $20 fee). Lodging is not provided for guests. We recommend booking a room at one of the nearby hotels.
