The Academic Villages are a UPG innovation for the integrating the curricular and extracurricular experiences of students. As a joint venture of the faculty and the office of student life, the Academic Villages have both residential and programming components. Students may choose to live in residence halls with other students who share the same broad disciplinary interests. Non-resident students are encouraged to participate in the activities of the village that matches their own academic interests. Currently, UPG operates academic villages for students interested in the humanities (Humanities Academic Village, the social and behavioral sciences (Behavioral Sciences Academic Village), the sciences and technology (Natural Sciences and New Technologies Academic Village) and international affairs. Students must apply on a competitive basis to live in one of the academic villages and must maintain their levels of academic performance and participation in village activates to continue to reside in an academic village.

Each village has a faculty director and a student council who are responsible for planning the lectures, films, 4exhibits, field trips, etc. that constitute the programming component of the academic villages. With faculty as the major providers of programs, events sponsored by the academic villages are frequently linked to specific academic programs and courses. UPG's academic villages provide a full calendar of cultural and public affairs events that augment the liberal arts and sciences education UPG students are receiving in the classroom.
